The creation of the primary school inspectors in 1835 revealed the State's willingness to manage the schooling of lower-class children. It started with the supervision of schools and their masters and soon went on to the inspection and then the assessment of teachers following the inspectors' violent protest after 7 968. The evaluation reports testify to this history. First centered on the school, it soon concerned the schoolmaster who was submitted to a compliance control made possible by the codification of schools and the methods of assessment are rather homogeneous.
