Correspondance inédite de Jean Potocki sur l'ambassade russe en Chine

Jean Potockls unpublished correspondence on the Russian mission to China, presented by Alexandre Stroev and Dominique Triaire. In 1805, Jean Potocki (1761-1805) took part in the Russian mission to China as leader of the scientific delegation. The mission failed, owing to disagreement on protocol, and did not go further than Ourga in Mongolia, but the scientists carried out active investigations all over Siberia and made varied and interesting discoveries, including that of the famous mammoth. As, on their return, there was no sign of any recompense, Potocki drew up a report addressed to the Minister Rumjancev, and wrote to him several times in December 1807, which resulted in three scientists being granted pensions. A few weeks later Potocki gave up politics. The ten documents published here for the first time were recently discovered in Moscow.Stroev Alexandre, Triaire Dominique.
