Problèmes des Lumières polonaises

Zdislaw Libera : Problems of the polish enlightenment. The Polish Enlightenment covers the period from the 1740s to the first twenty years of the 19th Century, and corresponds to a time of economic, social and cultural development which, however, ends with the loss of Polish independence. It developed in the face of the conservatism of the nobility and of threats from outside her frontiers, but it was given impetus by the growth of periodicals, of a national theatre and the reform of education. This article reviews the progress in the fields of science, historiography, socio-political thought ; literature, with its classical, «sentimental » and rococo tendencies is particularly studied, to show the diversity and richness of the Polish Enlightenment.Libera Zdzislaw.
