Sébastien Fath, The Beginnings of the Baptist Implantation in the Nord (1810-1821). The Baptist Church is one of the major branches of Protestant Christianity, characterized by the importance of the « professing » commitment of the faithful, betokened by the baptizing of the newly converted by total immersion. It settled originally in France in the Nord region. It is there that, at the end of the 1810s, it first emerged in continental Europe. It asserts itself in the commune of Nomian (in the « canton » of Orchies) around Louis Caulier and Jean-Baptiste Ladam. A small Baptist temple is built there as early as 1821.
