Les débuts de l'implantation baptiste dans le Nord (1810-1821)

Sébastien Fath, The Beginnings of the Baptist Implantation in the Nord (1810-1821). The Baptist Church is one of the major branches of Protestant Christianity, characterized by the importance of the « professing » commitment of the faithful, betokened by the baptizing of the newly converted by total immersion. It settled originally in France in the Nord region. It is there that, at the end of the 1810s, it first emerged in continental Europe. It asserts itself in the commune of Nomian (in the « canton » of Orchies) around Louis Caulier and Jean-Baptiste Ladam. A small Baptist temple is built there as early as 1821. This group is stimulated by the evangelist Henri Pyt (Société Continentale), and benefited from three circumstances : the scarcity of leaders at the parish level following the Revolution and the Empire wars, an increased opening towards external influences (thanks to occupying troops) and the impact of the Geneva-based Protestant « Réveil » on France, strategically positioned in view of the evangelization of Europe. These elements made it easier for Baptism to settle in the Nord, before spreading nationwide.Le baptisme est une des principales branches du christianisme protestant, caractérisé par l'importance de l'engagement individuel « professant », traduit par le baptême par immersion des convertis. Il s'est originellement implanté, en France, dans la région du Nord. C'est là, au terme de la décennie 1810, qu'il émerge pour la première fois en Europe continentale. Il s'affirme dans la commune de Nomain (canton d'Orchies), autour de Louis Caulier et de Jean-Baptiste Ladam. Un petit temple baptiste y est construit dès 1821. Ce groupe est stimulé par l'évangéliste Henri Pyt (Société Continentale), et a bénéficié de trois facteurs : le déficit d'encadrement paroissial consécutif à la Révolution et aux guerres de l'Empire, une ouverture accrue aux influences extérieures (rôle des troupes d'occupation) et l'impact du « Réveil » protestant de Genève sur la France, pays stratégique dans une optique d' évangélisation de l'Europe. Het Baptisme is een van de belangrijkste takken van het protestante christianisme, waarin de nadruk ligt op het individuele engagement, het getuigen en het doopsel met volledige onderdompeling van de bekeerlingen. Hert Baptisme duikt voor het eerst in West-Europa op in Noord-Frankrijk op het einde van de jaren 1810, meer bepaald in de gemeente Nomain (kanton Orchies), dank zij Louis Caulier en Jean-Baptiste Ladam. Men bouwt er in 1821 al een kleine baptistische tempel. De groep staat onder de leiding van een evangelist, Henri Pyt (Société Continentale). Drie factoren hebben bijgedragen tot die ontwikkeling : de leemten in de parochiale omkadering als een gevolg van de Revolutie en de oorlogen van het Rijk, een grotere aandacht voor bui- tenlandse invloeden (roi van de bezettingstroepen) en de impact van het protestantse « Réveil » in Genève op Frankrijk, een land dat als strategisch beschouwd werd in de optiek van een evangelisatie van Europa.
