The tragic vision of history in Ammianus Marcellinus has its foundation in the contradiction, that can neither be solved nor done away with, between the historian's unshakable faith in the eternity of Rome and the reality of events, that of a progressive and unstoppable decline of the Empire under the assaults of the Barbarians. Ammianus is convinced that Adrastes' law governs all human events : yet he never tires struggling against fate.
