Characterizing a specialised activity : smith-wheelwrights in the first century A.D. Urgent salvaging excavations carried out in the Bordeaux Justice Centre (Gironde) from 1994 to 1995 brought to light iron and steel workshops specialised in the making of metal bands for wheels. The rectangular metal bands were obtained through forging and soldering in forging kilns laid out directly on the ground and lying alongside elongated pit kilns. Those elongated structures were used by the metal bandaging of a wheel more resistant to wear. This highly specialised activity began as early as the outset of the first century A.D, between 15-30 A.D, and lasted as far down as the seventies/eighties A.D.
