Over against traditional historiography that lays the stress on the conflicts between Domitian and the Senate, certain historians lean today towards a rehabilitation of the emperor's behaviour, who would have fallen victim to the distorsion of the sources chiefly issued by the senate. As a matter of fact, after a few years during which Domitian had at heart to honour the old families of the aristocracy in order to conciliate them he came up against the senate's opposition, provoked by his absolutism, which he fought back by a repression.
