Describing artistic objects in heliodoros' ethiopics. In Heliodoros' Ethiopics there are two descriptions of artistic objects : Chariclea's waistband and a ring that is used for the redemption of the heroine. Studying their place in the narrative, their mode of insertion and the description device, one finds that Heliodoros is interested in a work of art as a reproduction of nature apt to convey some life-like impression, that he underscores its power of delusion and that description has only weak dramatic value. The two described objects are ornaments on two counts : as ornaments of a person and as ornaments of a narrative, and their exceptional value is expressed through subtle word play on superlatives.
