Les transformations du mythe dans l'Hélène d'Euripide

In Euripides the legend of Helena, as handed down to us through the Homeric poems, undergoes a complete transformation. Euripides introduces a ghostly counterpart of the character, thereby creating an aura of fantasy around his play. In addition to this, he totally subverts the meaning and value of all the elements that go into the making of the traditional legend, thus creating a drama in deliberate contradiction to the received legend. As a consequence, no credibility can any longer be attached to any mythical or dramatic narrative. There is a general shaking of age-old certainties. Beyond questioning the myths, Euripides' technique seems to be bent on invalidating any possibility of knowledge. Euripides carries over into the realm of the stage drama a philosopical reflection whose themes can be traced in the Greek thought of his own time.Euripide transforme complètement la légende d'Hélène que l'on connaît d'après les poèmes homériques. Il introduit dans sa pièce un double fantomatique du personnage et il crée ainsi une atmosphère de fantastique. Il inverse d'autre part la valeur de tous les éléments qui composent la légende traditionnelle et il construit un drame volontairement contradictoire par rapport à la version connue. Aucun récit mythique ou dramatique n'apparaît plus désormais crédible. Le poète ébranle toutes les certitudes. Au-delà de la contestation des mythes, sa technique théâtrale semble remettre en cause toute possibilité de connaissance. Euripide transpose, dans le domaine du théâtre, une réflexion philosophique dont on retrouve les thèmes dans la pensée grecque de son époque.Assael Jacqueline.
