In Euripides the legend of Helena, as handed down to us through the Homeric poems, undergoes a complete transformation. Euripides introduces a ghostly counterpart of the character, thereby creating an aura of fantasy around his play. In addition to this, he totally subverts the meaning and value of all the elements that go into the making of the traditional legend, thus creating a drama in deliberate contradiction to the received legend. As a consequence, no credibility can any longer be attached to any mythical or dramatic narrative. There is a general shaking of age-old certainties.
