Based on an inventory of 175 burial grounds, this first synthesis takes into account the material features as revealded by archeology, but also the questions which the historian raises on the meaning of the funeral rites. The tables here presented aim at setting the foundations of an evolutive typology of the modes of interment (plain earth tombs, coffers, amphorae, sarcophagi, graves under tumuli) and cremation (in graves, coffers, amphorae, troughs, cysts, wells). The dominant type is in either case the most modest, the grave tomb or loculus. From the late second century onwards, interment largely prevails (more in the cities than in the uici), although it never quite superseded cremation.
