Typologie des tombes et société dans le sud de la Gaule du Ier au IIIe siècle ap. J.-C.

Based on an inventory of 175 burial grounds, this first synthesis takes into account the material features as revealded by archeology, but also the questions which the historian raises on the meaning of the funeral rites. The tables here presented aim at setting the foundations of an evolutive typology of the modes of interment (plain earth tombs, coffers, amphorae, sarcophagi, graves under tumuli) and cremation (in graves, coffers, amphorae, troughs, cysts, wells). The dominant type is in either case the most modest, the grave tomb or loculus. From the late second century onwards, interment largely prevails (more in the cities than in the uici), although it never quite superseded cremation. Besides, the opposition between the two modes is to be taken as relative. And the differences from one tomb to another, from one graveyard to another, require to be understood an investigation of the social, cultural and geographical contexts, which eludes the simplistic opposition between indigenous traditions and Roman influence.Réalisée d'après un inventaire de 175 nécropoles, cette première synthèse tient compte des dispositions matérielles révélées par l'archéologie, mais aussi des questions que se pose l'historien sur la signification des rituels funéraires. Les tableaux présentés établissent une typologie évolutive des modes d'inhumation (en pleine terre, dans des coffres, en amphores, dans des sarcophages, sous tumuli...) et d'incinération (dans des fosses, coffres, amphores, auges, cistes, puits). Le type dominant reste dans les deux cas le plus modeste, la tombe en fosse ou loculus. A partir de la fin du IIe s., l'inhumation l'emporte nettement (plus dans les cités que dans les uici) sans jamais supplanter complètement l'incinération. Il convient au reste de relativiser l'opposition entre ces deux coutumes. Et les différences d'une tombe à une autre, d'une nécropole à une autre, demandent pour être comprises une étude des contextes sociaux, culturels, géographiques, échappant à l'opposition simpliste entre traditions indigènes et influence romaine.Foulcher Massip Christine.
