A fragment of Mélanippidès' Danaïds, a lyric poet of the Vth century B.C., gives a description of the Danaïds as drivers of chariots, huntresses, and gatherers of oriental aromatic plants, in keeping with the picture of the manly barbarian women such as it occurs in Aeschylus'trilogy and the other occurrences of the myth. The Danaids fit into a whole category of dangerous mythical women seen as a reflection of the Greek citizen : women living outdoors with men's occupations, they embody the contestation of the world of the oikos and the polis, one of whose foundations is the clear-cut separation between the activities of man (outside of oikos) and those of woman (inside the oikos).Un fragment des Danaïdes de Mélanippidès, poète lyrique du V...
