Friesland's Merchant Trade at the Beginning of the Middle Ages : an Update. This paper aims at updating and correcting certain aspects of a research thesis published in 1983 on Friesland's merchants and navigators in the Higher Middle Ages. It relies in particular on the findings of recent excavations carried out in York, Ipswich, London, Ribe and Birka to reassess the positions of Friesland's merchant trade in England and Scandinavia. If it does reassert the part played by the ancient Frisians in developing the flat- or rounded-hulled ships of the « proto-kogge » and « proto-hulk » types, it takes into account the new datation (ca. 1 100) of the famous Utrecht wrecked hull n° 1, that now forbids to see in it a witness or a vehicle of the ...
