Une ville vers 1300 : Calais

Calais was in no way on the verge of bankruptcy around 1300. From 1250 to 1298, it hat borrowed at less and less onerous rates. There were in Arras real bankers investing the funds of the Arras people. Around 1300, Calais counted 15.000 inhabitants. The city was becoming more and more Roman-speaking. It was dominated by the wealthy, who were extremely well-off, and this only through their trading because they practiced neither usury nor ship-commissioning. Family was understood in its narrower meaning, kinship was not as preeminent as alliance. Celibacy was lower in the city than in the rural suburb of Saint-Pierre. The hearth ratio seems to have been higher in Calais (5 ?) that in Saint-Pierre (3.75 ?).Calais n'était pas au bord de la faillite vers 1300. La ville était de plus en plus romane. Elle était dominée par les riches, qui l'étaient extrêmement, grâce au commerce, car ils ne faisaient ni usure, ni armement maritime. La famille était étroite, la parenté éclatée, l'alliance essentielle. Le célibat était moins élevé en ville que dans le faubourg rural de Saint-Pierre. De stad werd steeds romaanser. De stad werd bestuurd door zeer rijke handelaars, die echter geen woeker bedreven en niet in de scheepvaart aktief waren. Er waren kleine families, alleen nauwe verwantschap was van belang. Er was minder celibaat in de stad dan in de rurale voorstad Saint-Pierre.
