Centenaire et républicanisme : 1889 dans le Pas-de-Calais et le Nord

This paper aims at making out what attitude the two departments had at the time of the 1789 Centenary. We proceeded to the analysis through the local press and the préfectoral records of the way the Centenary was organized ; we attempted then to assess its official support on the one hand, and on the other the reluctance of the opponents who perceive clearly that the aim of the commemoration is to unite the country in a common adhesion to the republican regime, in the perspective of the October elections. The celebration is characterized by two high-lights ; May 5 th, a memory marked by a lesser violence which carries the hope to rally the largest number, and July 14th, the still controversial national day. President Carnot's visit adds, in the Nord and Pas-de-Calais, an opportunity to celebrate jointly the Revolution and the Republic. We showed how, on these festival days, the republicans as much as their opponents work to give the events of the past a meaning that may serve their political interests of the moment ; all the judgements passed on the Revolution are vehement because they actually bear on the political situation of 1889. For commemorating also means asking history, though schematized and biased, to legitimate a political regime.Cette étude a pour but de cerner quelle fut l'attitude des deux départements lors du Centenaire de 1789- On analyse ici dans la presse locale et les archives préfectorales comment le Centenaire s'est organisé ; on tente de mesurer ses soutiens officiels d'une part et de l'autre les réticences des opposants qui perçoivent clairement que l'enjeu de la commémoration est de souder le pays dans une adhésion au régime républicain, dans la perspective des élections d'octobre. La célébration connaît deux temps forts : le 5 mai, souvenir moins violent qui porte l'espoir de rallier le plus grand nombre, et le 14 Juillet, fête nationale encore controversée. Le voyage du président Carnot ajoute, dans le Pas-de-Calais, une occasion de célébrer conjointement la Révolution et la République. On montre comment, lors de ces fêtes, les républicains autant que les opposants travaillent à donner aux événements du passé un sens qui serve leurs intérêts politiques du moment : tous les jugements sur la Révolution sont véhéments, car ils portent en fait sur la situation politique de 1889. Car commémorer c'est demander à l'histoire, schématisée et orientée, de légitimer un régime politique.Het onderwep van dit artikel is de houding van de twee departementen tijdens de viering van de honderste verjaardag van de revolutie, in 1889, aan de hand van wat er in de lokale pers verscheen en van het archief van de prefectuur. Er is enerzijds de officiële steun, anderzijds de weigerachtigheid van de opposanten die duidelijk inzien dat de herdenking ook opgezet is om het land samen te smeden in de adhesie aan het republikeins regime met het oog op de verkiezingen in oktober. De belangrijkste data zijn : 5 mei, een minder gewelddadige herinnering waarmee men aansluiting bij de massa hoopt te vinden, 14 juli, nationale maar nog gekontesteerde feestdag. De reis van de president, Carnot, biedt de gelegen- heid in Pas de Calais, om revolutie en republiek samen te vieren. Men ziet hoe republikeinen en opposanten pogen het feest een betekenis te geven die past bij hun onderscheiden politiek belang. Aile uitspraken over de revolutie zijn heftig, omdat het feitelijk over de toestand van 1889 gaat.
