Polynesian lagoons belong to the public domain of French Polynesia Community. Successive laws of autonomy have increased thepowers of Polynesian authorities as to the preservation and management of lagoons. In some areas, the lagoons are subject to many and increasing human pressures that, in the short or long term, may endanger the durability and exceptional value of coral ecosystems. This article analyses the legal principles and rules applying to access and use of the lagoons.
