This article discusses the importance of storytelling and narration in recognizing a technical object during an evolving patrimonialisation process. I analyse the role of storytelling in the construction of a «cultural biography » of exhibited objects, notably in small and mid-sized municipal or community museums dedicated to World War I in the Nord-Pas-de-Calais and Flandre Occidentale. Mediation occurs through a series of stories : those stories that are reconstructed when the object is discovered or validated as being part of our heritage ; those collected so as to be able to interpret the object ; those constructed for the general public or shared with them.
