Since the 1960s, a rapid urban growth has characterized French-speaking black Africa, where the number of urban dwellers has been multiplied by 11. Fifty years after the political independences, the demographic dynamics of cities have changed and the old models, rural exodus and hegemony of large cities, are being questioned. Nowadays, researchers underline circular mobility between cities and rural areas as well as factors impeding urbanization or explaining local cases of counterurbanization.
