The patronage of the high nobility and the recruitment of parish priests in fifteenth- and sixteenth-century North Brabant. Every clergyman in search of a pastoral or other benefice had to make himself visible to a person or an institution possessing an advowson. A collection of case studies about the nomination to pastoral benefices in the northern part of the Duchy of Brabant (now the Dutch province of North Brabant) during the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries by patrons belonging to the high nobility — that is by the seigneurs of Breda, of Bergen op Zoom, of Grave and Cuijk, and by the Duke of Brabant — reveals the mechanisms at work in the recruitment of parish priests and in the assignment of pastorates.
