Tools associated with ceramic production were identified through functional analysis of two collections of bone and antler artefacts, one from the site of Clairvaux XIV, dated to the Middle Neolithic (Néolithique Moyen Bourguignon, first half of the 4th millennium BC), the other from Chalain 4, dated to the Late Neolithic (Clairvaux group, 4th-3rd transition millennium BC). These are mainly bone tools interpreted as lissoirs (“ smoothers”) or scrapers because of their shape and use-wear. Probably used during the shaping of pots, these tools represent only a small proportion of bone and antler equipment, mostly used by these communities for working wood, bark and hide.
