Control Over Water-ways : the Meuse River, from the origins to 1600. The control over the traffic on the river Meuse by the power-holders is carried out in a very effective way, as early as the XIIIth-XIVth centuries, thanks to the castles and urban fortifications, and at bridges as well. Yet, the strategic role of the river increases in the XVth century and still more in the XVIth. From the economic point of view, compelling all traffic to stop at the docks ensures primarily the supply of the towns in basic commodities.
