Une verrerie céphalomorphe provenant de la nécropole du Vieil-Atre à Boulogne-sur-Mer (Pas-de-Calais)

The collections of Boulogne glassware, which rank among the most important in French museums, as Morin-Jean said so explicitly in its survey of Roman glassware published in 1913, have aile but sunk into oblivion since World War I. Before producing a systematic inventory of them, we shall introduce here a very important piece, which deserves quite particularly to be brought to the view of both specialists and laymen. It consists in a glass article blown into a head-shaped mould, which was discovered in Boulogne-sur-Mer in November 1888 during excavations carried out by Lelaurain in the Gallo-Roman necropolis of the «Vieil-Atre», and which has since belonged to the city's archaeology collections (Boulogne Château-Musée, inventory nomber 4045/5). Its comparative study leads us to search for parallel types of handicraft essentially in the IVth century A.D. Rhineland. It is a testimony of the relations existing in the Lower Empire between Boulogne and the centres of eastern Gaul and of Germania, and also, in a more general fashion, of the vitality of this site during Late Antiquity, in keeping thus with the data made out thanks to excavations recently carried out in Boulogne and in several other sites in the Nord and Pas-de-Calais, which show that the Lower Empire was not, in northern Gaul, the time of irrémissible decline which it has too often been reputed to be.Les collections de verreries boulonnaises, qui comptent parmi les plus importantes des musées français, comme le stipulait explicitement Morin-Jean dans sa synthèse sur le verre romain parue en 1913, sont tombées dans l'oubli depuis la Première Guerre mondiale. Avant d'en produire un inventaire systématique, nous en présentons une pièce importante, qui mérite tout particulièrement d'être portée à la connaissance des spécialistes et du public. Il s'agit d'une verrerie soufflée dans un moule en forme de tête, qui fut mise au jour à Boulogne-sur-Mer en novembre 1888 à l'issue des fouilles pratiquées par Lelaurain dans la nécropole gallo-romaine du «Vieil-Atre», et qui appartient depuis lors aux collections municipales d'archéologie (Château-Musée de Boulogne, n° inventaire 4045/5). L'étude comparative nous amène à chercher les parallèles à ce type de réalisation artisanale essentiellement dans la Rhénanie du IVe siècle de notre ère. Elle témoigne des rapports existant au Bas-Empire entre Boulogne et les centres de Gaule de l'est et de Germanie, ainsi que d'une façon plus générale de la vitalité du site durant l'Antiquité Tardive, en conformité avec les données issues des fouilles récemment pratiquées à Boulogne et sur plusieurs sites du Nord/ Pas-de-Calais, qui montrent que le Bas-Empire n'a pas été en Gaule septentrionale l'époque de déclin irrémissible que l'on a trop souvent voulu y retrouver.De antieke glasverzameling van Boulogne is een van de belangrijkste in Frankrijk, wat Morin-Jean in zijn synthese over het Romeins glas in 1913 al onderstreepte. Ondertussen is die verzameling vergeten geraakt. Vooraleer een systematische inventaris te publiceren stellen wij een uitzonderlijk stuk aan het publiek voor. Het gaat om een stuk glas geblazen in een mal in de vorm van een hoofd, dat in november 1888 door Lelaurain in de necropool van Vieil-Atre opgegraven werd en dat sedertdien deel uitmaakt van de stede-lijke verzameling (Chateau-Musée de Boulogne, inventaris n° 4045/5). Men vindt vergelijkbare stukken in de Rijnstreek in de IVde eeuw. Het is een bewijs van de kontakten tussen Boulogne en centra in Oost-Gallië en Germanie, en verder van de vitaliteit van de site tijdens het Late keizerrijk, die ook blijkt uit recente opgravingen in Nord/ Pas-de-Calais die aantonen dat die periode in Noord-Gallië niet een zo groot verbal heeft gebracht als algemen wordt aanvaard.Belot Eric, Canut Véronique.
