Agen, quelques aspects de la croissance urbaine

Recent trends in the urban growth of Agen, sw France. Agen, Lot-et-Garonne, a medium sized provincial town of SW France and the administrative center of a département, lying halfway from Toulouse to Bordeaux, the two major regional centers, has a total population of 55 000 inhabitants in the urban area. Its demographic and spatial evolution is quite comparable to that of the other towns which belong to the same group and level in the region : Auch, Tarbes, Cahors, Rodez. A positive migratory balance explained the population growth of Agen up to the early seventies ; the migratory trend paced down recently and the population growth relying now on the natural demographic balance the total population growth is much slower. A new distribution pattern of population and activities appears : there is an out migration from the down town district and a marked growth of the population in the peripheral municipalities ; at the same time, many industrial and trade firms elect new locations on the eastern and southern margins of the agglomeration ; unfortunately these various trends are combined without a comprehensive plan.Ville moyenne de 55 000 habitants, à mi-distance des deux métropoles régionales, Bordeaux et Toulouse, Agen présente une évolution démographique et spatiale comparable à celle des autres villes de cette taille dans le Sud-Ouest. Si la croissance démographique reposait surtout sur un bilan migratoire très favorable jusqu'à ces dernières années, le solde naturel devient l'élément moteur, la croissance étant de ce fait très ralentie. Le centre perd sa population et les communes périphériques grossissent. En même temps les activités commerciales et industrielles choisissent de nouvelles localisations à l'est et au sud de l'ensemble urbain.Charrié Jean-Paul.
