Not until the 1980s did the single woman become a new object of study for historians. Despite the fact that throughout the entire modem era, the proportion of single women made up almost a fourth of the adult female population, this area remained relatively unexplored, especially in France. This article presents and evaluates existing research and seeks to promote new avenues of research to be undertaken. So far, demographic data relative to single women constitutes the most solid material.
