This study seeks to illustrate the richness of "cherches de feux" within the framework of studies of medieval demography, based on the example of the town of Chalon-sur-Saône and its suburbs between 1381 and 1476. After having observed the specific problems posed by the "cherches" in this context, the author traced the evolution of the number of "feux" in Chalon and in some of its suburbs during the surveyed period. He was thus able to reveal both the double depression happening around 1423 and the importance of variations over the short and mean term.
