Comtemporaries as well as historians have considered the age differences between spouses as an excellent indicator of the character of the spousal relationship. In this article we discuss three potential mechanisms which might determine the choice of a spouse of a given age : the age preferences of the potential spouses ; the role which third parties play and the structure of the interaction opportunities. We argue that during the XIXe century, all three mechanisms have changed in such a way that smaller age differences between spouses have been the result.
