A study based on the family reconstitution of twelve villages, selected at random with a population of 10 583 in 1821. As five of these villages were not originally selected but were used to replace other villages, results had to be weighted. The proportion of births not recorded in parish registers, due to migrations of couples or omissions, can be estimated by a method which takes into account the marriage of the children of the couples under observation. This proportion fell front 11 °/o at the end of the XVIIth century to 2.5 % at the beginning of the XIXth.
