The epigraphic formula ‘ sacerdos intrauit sub iugum’ or ‘ sacerdos intrauit’ can be read on a series of stellae unearthed at archaeological sites of the hinterland of the colonies of Carthage and Cirta. Carved on documents issued by priests of Saturnus Augustus, this formula is commonly associated with the existence of ‘ Saturnian mysteries’ and has led to the assumption that these priests may have been initiated to rites of passage where they ‘ entered under the yoke’ of Saturnus during ceremonies we know nothing about. This was supposedly a rite of submission where the priests surrendered into the hands of the god.
