How might the soldiers and officers of the Roman imperial army have described the sense of their military service ? Were imperial soldiers treated like mercenaries and simply expected to obey in return for their pay, as is often assumed ? Or did they cherish an abstract or moral ideal for which they were prepared to risk their lives ? This article presents evidence from the first five centuries AD for a military doctrine that aimed to instil a patriotic attitude into Roman soldiers.
