False memories and aging: results and theories Age-related differences in false recognition is a topic which is broadly investigated since this past decade. We propose a review of a part of these studies, showing that false memories are due to age-related deficits in discriminative encoding and familiarity-based retrieval processes rather than perceptual details based processes. Difficulties in taking into account the source of acquisition information might explain the false memories in the elderly adults. The pattern observed in these individuals is also discussed in terms of decrement of metamnesic processes and difficulties in exploiting efficient retrieval strategies. Altogether, the studies presented here allow assuming that the execu...
