The recent growth and future of medium sized French towns. Medium sized towns contain one third of the total urban population of France. Their rate of population growth is very fast. As far as industry is concerned they rank among the average for French towns. They are characterized by the enlarging range of their tertiary services and by the increasing amount of construction which have been brought about by the recent improvements in public spending (which are enabling the French provinces to catch up with the Parisian level of expenditure) and by the rising level of local consumption. These towns tend more and more to detach themselves from the regional economy and integrate themselves into the larger national and international economy. B...
