La région du Vinho Verde (Portugal)

The production of vinho verde wine in Northern Portugal. — Northern Portugal, between Minho and Douro rivers, is a very ancient wine growing area. Vinho verde can be considered as its symbol. It is favoured by acid soils and atmospheric wetness. The wine is closely associated to the region's intensive polycultural system of cultivation. The major part of the vintage consists in red wine for domestic use. The development of this wine economy is confronted with overpopulation, fragmentation of farms, plots, and production, and the lack of an efficient cooperative system. Such difficulties are a good example of the portuguese agricultural and agrarian problems.Production ancestrale du Nord-Ouest atlantique portugais, ce vin de terroir a tardivement reçu la consécration de l'appellation contrôlée. Ses caractéristiques œnologiques particulières tiennent à l'humidité constante, à l'acidité des sols, à la vigne haute sur supports dont il est issu et qui cloisonne un paysage de polyculture intensive. Le vin rouge l'emporte largement et ne s'exporte guère qu'à la suite des émigrants. La région est surpeuplée, la production très émiettée, l'organisation coopérative et commerciale embryonnaire : le Vinho Verde symbolise le traditionalisme et l'originalité du Minho comme l'inadaptation grandissante de son organisation économique et sa fragilité face au monde actuel.Guichard Francois.
