In this contribution the virtues of the protagonists in Greek novels are studied, especially in Achilles Tatius and Heliodorus, by comparing them with the Christian virtues, particularly chastity, virginity, fidelity and piety. These virtues are exalted as much in the novels as in the apocryphal Acts of the apostles, in the Apologists (especially Justin) and the first Fathers (particularly Clement, who, although refuting Gnostic rigour, emphasizes the sanctity of marriage as much as the excellence of virginity).
