In the village of Udayapur stands the Udayeśvara temple, the construction of which was completed by the end of the 11th century in the reign of the Paramāra king Udayāditya. The temple, one of the earliest remaining Bhūmija temples, is embellished with an abundance of sculpture. This article focuses on the deities on the walls. It is an attempt to analyse the iconographic programme in order to appreciate what is presented to the devotee who comes to worship the god Śiva. The choice of themes represented and their arrangement underline the oscillation between adhesion to the artistic tradition and innovation.
