Le programme iconographique du temple d’Udayeśvara à Udayapur, Madhya Pradesh, XIe siècle

In the village of Udayapur stands the Udayeśvara temple, the construction of which was completed by the end of the 11th century in the reign of the Paramāra king Udayāditya. The temple, one of the earliest remaining Bhūmija temples, is embellished with an abundance of sculpture. This article focuses on the deities on the walls. It is an attempt to analyse the iconographic programme in order to appreciate what is presented to the devotee who comes to worship the god Śiva. The choice of themes represented and their arrangement underline the oscillation between adhesion to the artistic tradition and innovation. The consideration of the distribution of the images on the different parts of the building and the recognition of the principle of paring deities, based on strong thematic and iconographic affinities, lead to the appreciation of the organisation of the divine court. The mise en scène of the divine results from a great elaboration which emphasises the interaction between sculpture and architecture in the creation of a place dedicated to the meeting of the devotee and the revered deity.Dans le village d’Udayapur au Madhya Pradesh se dresse le temple d’Udayeśvara dont la construction fut achevée à la fin du XIe siècle sous le règne du roi Paramāra Udayāditya. Le temple, un des plus anciens exemples du type dit Bhūmija, est doté d’un riche décor sculpté. Cet article s’intéresse aux divinités représentées sur la zone murale. Il propose une analyse du programme iconographique afin d’apprécier ce qui est donné à voir au dévot venu rendre un culte au dieu Śiva. Ce programme est remarquable tant par le choix des thèmes que par leur combinaison, qui souligne l’oscillation entre adhésion à la tradition artistique et innovation. L’examen de l’emplacement des images sur les différentes parties de l’édifice et la reconnaissance du principe d’appariement des divinités basé sur de fortes affinités thématiques et iconographiques permettent d’appréhender l’organisation de la cour divine. La mise en scène du divin résulte d’une grande élaboration qui met en évidence l’interaction de la sculpture et de l’architecture dans la création d’un lieu dédié à la rencontre du dévot et du dieu qu’il révère.Tichit Doria.
