Fortifications et histoire à Amathonte

Since the Archaic Period, the whole city of Amathus (acropolis and lower city) was surrounded by a defensive wall, including three well identified doors. This wall was powerfully strengthened and without doubt connected to an aqueduct towards 300 B.C., contemporaneously with the construction of the external harbour, and then during the Hellenistic Period. After a long abandonment, it was not until the VIth cent. A. D. that these defenses were confined to smaller areas (including the top of the acropolis). These walls were vainly reinforced during the VIIth century and the arabic invasions that strocke a fatal blow to the town.C'est dès l'époque archaïque que la ville d'Amathonte a été munie d'une muraille, percée de trois portes aujourd'hui bien localisées, autour de tout l'espace urbain : acropole et ville basse. L'ensemble a été puissamment renforcé et sans doute mis en relation avec un aqueduc aux alentours de 300, au moment de la construction du port externe, puis au cours de l'époque hellénistique. Après un long abandon, ce n'est qu'au VIe siècle de notre ère que l'on replie les défenses autour de zones restreintes, notamment le sommet de l'acropole ; défenses renforcées au VIIe siècle, en vain, lors des incursions arabes, qui portèrent un fatal à la ville.Aupert Pierre, Leriche Pierre.
