A certain number of recent publications dealing with Roman History of Cassius Dio induce us to re-examine some of the problems raised by the work of the historian of the Severian Age, particularly concerning his account of the Augustan period. Dio's borrowings from Livy, in his account of events up to the battle of Actium, are certainly less important than has generally been supposed. The debate on monarchy, introduced by Agrippa's and Maecenas' speeches, acquires greater meaning if the political terminology used by the historian is taken into account and if the speeches are replaced in the context of the third century.
