The concept of « insularity » only partly overlaps with that of « coast » or « littoral » and therefore calls for a very different legal approach. The author notes the absence of legal articles on the special legal character of islands in environmental and planning legislation. He then considers whether there are any legal instruments specially adapted to the island context that make it possible to take better account of the environnement in public and private decision-making. Two questions are specifically addressed. The first is to know whether the law proper does respond to the special character of islands, within the framework of environmental protection, planning or territorial development measures.
