Nineteenth-century French bourgeois drama exerted a powerful influence on Oscar Wilde's dramatic works. In the first place, the Irish playwright used this convenient formal frame to structure his society comedies. In the second place, he handled it as a critical and subversive tool to question the ideological and social balance of the British Establishment.
