James Connolly : entre nationalisme et socialisme

In this article we shall explore the different stages of Connolly's intellectual and ideological evolution in a diachronic way, by relying on his writings and his political activities. Ever since his arrival in Dublin in May 1896, he had aimed at demonstrating that he was both a nationalist and a socialist and underlined the difference which separated him from the nationalists of the IRB, « our friends, the physical force men ». After his return from the USA in 1910 and the creation of the ICA, of which he became the commander, he multiplied the overtures to the minority of the Volunteers who refused to follow the Redmondists. At last, we shall present two interpretations of the secret meeting which took place from January 19 to January 22 1916 between him and the members of the Military Council of the IRB and during which he took the Fenian oath and was co-opted to the Military Council.Dans cet article, nous étudions les différentes étapes de l'évolution intellectuelle et idéologique de James Connolly de façon diachronique, en nous appuyant sur ses écrits et ses activités politiques. Dès son installation en Irlande en mai 1896, il se proclame à la fois nationaliste et socialiste, se démarquant des nationalistes de l'IRB, ses « amis qui prônent l'emploi de la force physique ». Après son retour des Etats-Unis en 1910 et la création de l'ICA dont il devient le commandant en 1914, il multiplie les avances à la minorité des Volunteers qui a refusé de suivre les Redmondistes. Dans un dernier temps, il conviendra de présenter deux interprétations de la rencontre secrète qui eut lieu du 19 au 22 janvier 1916 entre lui et les membres du Conseil militaire de l'IRB, au cours de laquelle il prêta le serment fenian et fut coopté au Conseil militaire.Ollivier Sophie.
