Identity or Hybridization ? Mapping Irish Culture in Seamus Heaney and Paul Muldoon

The problem of cultural identity is a crucial element of both social and individual descriptions of the relation between self and other, especially in post-colonial societies and literatures. As an alternative to the concept of identity, this article proposes a process of hybridization, translation, or recursive mapping. This description is employed in a contrastive analysis of some exemplary texts by Seamus Heaney ("Anahorish", "Bogland", "Act of Union") and Paul Muldoon ("The Sonogram", To Ireland, I, "The Mudroom") that concern themselves in very different ways with the mapping of Irish cultural identity.La question de l'identité culturelle est un aspect essentiel dans les descriptions sociales et individuelles des relations du même et de l'autre, en particulier dans les sociétés et les post-coloniales. Comme alternative au concept d'identité, cet article s'appuie sur le processus d'hybridation, de traduction ou de cartographie recursive.
