The evolution and status of the Irish language in Northern Ireland remains complex and controversial, being bound up with political and identity issues. For Protestants and/or Unionists, Gaelic is closely associated with the nationalist struggle ; it is perceived as the language of rebellion and as such, its use and teaching were long marginalised by the Northern Irish authorities. Since the beginning of the 70s, Sinn Fein and the IRA have largely succeeded in appropriating the Irish language. Yet, it is also possible to consider the language as common ground to be enjoyed and shared by the two communities as part of a common heritage.
