Daniel O'Connell et la France

During his lifetime, Daniel O'Connell was an outstanding figure at the world's level. In the France of the Restoration and the July Monarchy, the ideological debate was centered around the question of dealing with the revolutionary legacy. That debate was influenced by foreign references, among which O'Connell held an important position. Less approached by historians, the French reaction to the ideas and deeds of the Irish orator was characterized by multiple and sometimes contradictory interpretations depending on the various political groups. As a source of inspiration or rejection, Daniel O'Connell was used according to the purposes of each group.
