L'Irlande et l'Amérique latine

Since the 16th century many Irish soldiers, missionaries and emigrants have played a role in the history of South America. But these historic and cultural links have been neglected by the Irish State, which has established only limited diplomatic links with South American countries. In the 1980s, however, Irish public opinion manifested real concern for this continent, in particular for El Salvador and Nicaragua, and even influenced Irish foreign policy in relation to these countries and to the United States.Soldats, missionnaires ou émigrants, nombre d'Irlandais ont participé à l'histoire de l'Amérique latine, et ce, dès le XVIème siècle. Mais ces liens historiques et culturels ne se sont pas concrétisés au XXème siècle, l'Etat irlandais n'accordant qu'une importance minime à ses liens diplomatiques avec les Etats latino-américains. Cela dit, au cours des années quatre-vingt, l'opinion publique s'est intéressée à ce continent, notamment au Salvador et au Nicaragua, au point d'influencer la politique étrangère irlandaise vis-à-vis de ces pays et des Etats-Unis.Gillissen Christophe.
