When Mary Robinson became the seventh President of Ireland in 1990, she entered the history of her country. She is now seen as the symbol of Ireland in the '90's, having been the Head of State at the time when several legislation, like the right to divorce, became effective. Yet her role, as defined by the Constitution of 1937, is not really one of decisions and action, since the head of the Government is the Prime Minister. In that sense, one can say that the office of President is mostly honorary.
