The article considers at first the relations between an 18th century poem, The Lament for Art O'Leary, and two contemporary works (a poem then a play) by Dermot Bolger : The Lament for Arthur Cleary. Then it dwells on the « modern » features of the play, in particular on the poetic integrated staging of the revisited theme of exile. No tears for Ireland nor for a tragic destiny. Cleary, a worker, is back home only to find the same dreary industrial suburbs he has left and never recognizes Ireland. He discovers both love and violence - dismissing violence and compromise at the same time.
