In this paper the author argues that the British state, in dealing with the British media covering the Northern Ireland conflict, had an interventionist, authoritarian and repressive policy. Media control had been very effective over the years as a result of the application of a large number of laws culminating in the Broadcast Ban (or TV and Radio Ban) in 1988. Before the introduction of this ban reporting on the «troubles» was quite a task for journalists. Researchers have compiled lists of banned films or news and songs on TV and radio.
