Cuchulain's story is the play within the play, the hero's tragedy within the burlesque comedy of the secondary characters. The Blind Man prepares Cuchulain's fate and his imagination changes the reality of the action into legend. In the main plot, the turning-point of the drama is the oath, a theme introduced by the Blind Man. The ceremony of the fire, the women's song, the sacrifice of Cuchulain's son and the hero's fight with the waves suggest a rituall. Ritual and supernatural contribute to create an impression of doom. The tragic plot reflects the burlesque plot so that the two plays form only one act with a mirror-like structure. The Blind Man is Conchubar's anti-self.
