The cross is there only because he dreams it ; yet, this unreal cross has the power of shortening the breath of him who carries it. Yeats creates the illusion through the word. Music contributes to the ritual as it does in the noh plays. The play is a genuine musical or rhythmical composition. The dramatic structure follows a dialectical movement opposing a thesis — the orthodox Christian of the spectators — and its antithesis — the heretical ideas that Yeats develops in the action.
