Simon Vestdijk and the Irish Literary Tradition

This article attempts to trace some of the historical and literary used by the Dutch author Simon Vestdijk (1898-1971) in the writing of his two "Irish" novels, Ierse nachten (1946) and De vijf roeiers (1951). The remarkable similarities between these two novels and the Irish Big House novel have so far been ignored. Although there is no positive evidence that Vestdijk knew of the Big House novel, or had read Maria Edgeworth's Castle Rackrent and The Absentee, a comparison with Edgeworth suggests strongly that he was at least familiar with the genre, and probably with her work. Even if the many analogies between Ierse nachten and Castle Rackrent cannot be used to prove a direct influence, they serve to indicate the degree to which Vestdijk had familiarized himself with the social and historical circumstances he deals with in his Irish novels.Cet article vise à retracer une partie de la documentation historique et littéraire employée par l'auteur néerlandais, Simon Vestdijk, dans la composition de ses deux romans « irlandais », Ierse nachten (1946) et De vijf roeiers (1951). Les ressemblances remarquables entre ces deux romans et le roman irlandais dit « Big House novel » (« roman de château ») sont passées jusqu'ici inaperçues. Il n'y a aucune preuve ni que Vestdijk ait connu le roman de château ni qu'il eût lu Castle Rackrent et The Absentee de Maria Edgeworth, mais une comparaison avec Edgeworth suggère avec quelque poids qu'il connaissait au moins le genre et selon toute probabilité l'oeuvre d'Edgeworth. Même si le grand nombre d'analogies entre Ierse nachten et Castle Rackrent ne suffisent pas à prouver une influence directe, elles indiquent néanmoins la mesure dans laquelle Vestdijk s'était familiarisé avec les circonstances sociales et historiques qu'il traite dans ses romans irlandais.Lanters José.
