The tragic scene is a favoured place in ancient Greece for the dramatist and for the characters who wish to play with words : with an interlocutor who does not know the whole truth and sees only a part, like Aegisthos, at the end of Sophocles’ play, Electra uses language which is ambiguous because there is no proper noun to refer to the cadaver which is visible but covered. The vocabulary of vision is used, in the recognition scenes, in order to maintain ambiguity (when the complement is not a proper name) and to remove it, at the moment of revelation of the real identity of a character.
