We study the phenomenon of voluntary ambiguity by placing it in the framework of communication mechanisms and the different levels of linguistic analysis. The ideal of bi-unequivocality, satisfying the demands of clarity and truth extolled by treatises on rhetoric, is answered in the Latin texts by all kinds of situations and statements which illustrate the disparity between the saying and the said, between the production and reception of meaning, which can be annihilated, perverted, split, even reduced.
